It’s spooky season! Between fumbling for a last minute costume idea and figuring out which candy you’re going to be putting in your trick or treat bowls this year, it’s the most wonderful (stressful!) time of the year. One of the major hallmarks of the holiday and one of the best ways to relieve stress during Halloween season is to watch a movie. Halloween is known for its variety of movies ranging from the funniest comedies to the most fear-inducing horror movies.

It can be tricky (no pun intended) to know what film to throw on one of these cool, fall nights. That’s what we’re here for! These five Halloween movies are sure to leave you laughing, frightened, or just having a grand ol’ time! Let’s dive in!

1. Halloween

We have to start with the simplest answer! There have been twelve Halloween movies released in the franchise, which stars Jamie Lee Curtis as the protagonist. If you’ve ever heard of “Michael Myers,” he’s the primary villain in the franchise. One of the main reasons to give the Halloween movies a shot is that there’s a new one coming out on October 14, 2022.

There’s a reason franchises are so successful. People love to binge watch movies, and with 12 films to get through, Halloween is a classic example of a franchise that gives you plenty to get through.

However, be prepared that this franchise isn’t for the faintest of heart. Michael Myers is one of the spookiest, scariest villains in the cinematic universe, and while the movies are universally panned, they’re also mostly made for true horror fans.

2. Hocus Pocus

Let’s switch gears here and go with another movie that is worth watching in the here and now, but this time a comedy! Hocus Pocus 2 came out on Disney+ on September 30, 2022, so you now have two Hocus Pocus films to watch! A comedy about a villainous trio of witches, Hocus Pocus drops the horror in favor of the laughs.

Featuring Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy, Hocus Pocus is a 1993 classic that holds up to this day. While the sequel hasn’t received the ravest reviews, it provides a great level of nostalgia as a blast from the past type of film. We suggest watching both of the movies the next time you need a good laugh!

3. Beetlejuice

Resurrected as a Broadway hit, Beetlejuice is one of those movies that mixes comedy with horror perfectly. While it won’t scare you too much, there are certainly some moments that will get you out of your seat. As previously mentioned, Beetlejuice has been brought back on Broadway, so it’s a perfect film to watch with the anticipation of seeing it on stage after.

Michael Keaton plays the titular character perfectly, and the jokes hold up to this day. The 1988 film, directed by Tim Burton, brings to life one of the most iconic Halloween characters in the titular character, and the cleverness of the plot is unmatched.

Bonus points! One of the best Halloween costumes out there is Beetlejuice himself! So not only will you be watching a great movie, but you’ll be researching a potential costume as well!

4. Nightmare Before Christmas

Our first stop-motion movie on the list is another film by legendary filmmaker Tim Burton. Tim Burton might as well be known as Mr. Halloween for his work, with other classics including Edward Scissorhands, Frankenweenie, Corpse Bride, and so, so many more.

But we’re highlighting Nightmare Before Christmas here because it’s a tremendous Halloween film. Jack Skellington, the protagonist, is one of the most clever leading-men (leading-skeletons?) in cinematic history, and villain Oogie Boogie is one of the strangest yet most compelling villains in stop-motion history.

Not only will you be watching one of the great Halloween films, but you’ll also be getting another holiday thrown in with the Christmas theme in the movie! Any movie that features Santa Claus (or in their world Sandy Claws) getting kidnapped is a movie that must be watched.

5. The Addams Family

Going back to movies that have more than one entry to the list, The Addams Family is a classic series of movies about, well, The Addams Family! You may have seen that Netflix is coming out with a new show called “Wednesday,” and that is going to be about Wednesday Addams, the daughter of the titular family.

Featuring Gomez, Morticia, Wednesday, and Pugley, the Addams Family is one of the most hilarious yet spooky families in cinematic history. There have been plenty of spin-offs into modern culture, and each member of the family remains popular costumes to this day.

The original 1991 film holds up to this day and we recommend watching not only the first one, but all of the sequels and spin-offs as well this holiday season.
